Air Plant Jellyfish Care Guide

Air plants prefer filtered water, rainwater, or “aged” tap water that has been sitting out for about 24 hours so chlorine can evaporate.

We do not recommend using distilled water for long-term care. Air plants absorb small amounts of minerals from water, and distilled water contains no minerals, which can eventually starve the plant over time.

Air plants can live for many years with proper care.

Over time, many air plants will also produce small baby plants (called pups) that grow from the base of the plant. These pups can eventually grow into full plants of their own.

No — it's best not to soak the sea urchin shell.

Sea urchin shells are natural and somewhat delicate. Repeated soaking can cause the shell to become brittle and eventually break.

When soaking your jellyfish, simply lift the air plant out of the shell, soak the plant, allow it to dry, and then place it back in the shell.

However, if you are misting your plant, you do not need to remove it from the shell.

No. The plant absorbs water through its leaves, so you only need to water the plant itself.

Avoid spraying water inside the shell. If water becomes trapped inside the shell and sits in the crown of the air plant, it can lead to rot.

Most Air Plant Jellyfish will not need a larger shell.

Air plants typically grow longer rather than wider, so the base of the plant usually continues to fit comfortably inside the shell.

One exception is if your air plant flowers and produces baby plants (called pups). Over time, these pups can cluster at the base and make the plant wider.

If that happens, you can either remove the pups or upgrade to a slightly larger shell.

The size of your jellyfish depends on the type of air plant inside.

Some varieties stay small and compact, while others can grow much larger over time.

Air plants grow slowly, so changes in size happen gradually.

One exception is Spanish moss, which can grow quite quickly in the right conditions and may become longer and fuller over time.

Air plants can enjoy time outdoors during warm months, but they should be placed in bright shade or filtered sunlight.

However, Air Plant Jellyfish are best suited for indoor display. Heavy rain, strong winds, or harsh sun can damage the sea urchin shell over time.

If you place your jellyfish outside temporarily, choose a protected location and bring it indoors if temperatures drop below 50°F.

Cars experience extreme temperature swings — very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter — which can stress or damage the plant. It may also block your field of vision while driving.

Air Plant Jellyfish are happiest in a bright indoor space with good airflow.
